When and how was the Institute founded?
The Institute for Literature and Arts grew out of the Center for Theory of Literature and Arts of the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. On the proposal of Academician Vojislav Đurić, Director of the Center, the Executive Council of the Assembly of Serbia adopted the Decree on the Establishment of the Institute on September 15, 1962.

As an independent scientific institution, the Institute began its work on January 1, 1963. Soon it became the largest and most prestigious scientific institution in the field of literary science in the then Yugoslavia.
Cooperation and Development
In the beginning, the Institute was oriented towards raising and directing young researchers and gathering previously unconnected research forces. It continuously cooperated with related scientific, cultural, and educational institutions in the country and abroad.

Development Milestones
40 Years (2002)
Director Dr. Miodrag Maticki published the text "Institute for Literature and Arts 1962-2002" in the journal Literary History, summarizing the work until then.
50 Years (2012)
Prof. Dr. Bojan Đorђеvić prepared the monograph Half a Century of Literary Science. The foundation, development, project work, and publishing activity are presented in detail.
60th Jubilee (2022)
An updated Catalog of Editions from 1962 to 2022 was prepared, representing a kind of bibliography of all Institute editions.
